How to Optimize Plywood Container Loading
Efficient container loading is critical for minimizing shipping costs per sheet of plywood. The key question every importer asks: should I use a 20ft, 40ft, or 40HC container?
Container Types for Plywood Shipping
- 20ft Container: Max 20 MT payload, typically 8 pallet positions. Best for small orders or when port restrictions limit container size.
- 40ft Container: Max 25.5 MT payload, typically 16 pallet positions. Standard choice for medium-volume orders.
- 40ft High Cube (40HC): Max 28.5 MT payload, up to 18 pallet positions. Most popular for plywood due to extra height allowing taller stacks. Best cost-per-sheet ratio.
- Flatbed Truck: Max 21 MT, 16 pallet positions. Used for domestic delivery from port to warehouse.
Weight-Limited vs. Space-Limited
Plywood loading is almost always weight-limited for thicker sheets (18mm+) and heavier cores (Eucalyptus, Acacia). For thin sheets (3–9mm) with light cores (Styrax), loading can be space-limited — meaning you run out of pallet positions before reaching the weight limit.
Bundle Optimization
Our calculator uses factory-standard bundle constraints: 900mm maximum stack height, 1,760 kg maximum bundle weight, and pieces rounded to the nearest 5 for production efficiency. These are the same parameters used in Vinawood's actual production planning.
Tip: If your plywood has a non-standard density, use the “Custom Density” option in the core material selector. This is useful for bamboo plywood, tropical hardwoods, or engineered composite panels.
